Job Description

Kawaiaha’o Church School-a Christian, Montessori, Hawaiian dual-language program for toddlers, pre-school and elementary keiki—is  looking for a creative and dynamic School Director.  Strong administrative and interpersonal skills required with a firm understanding of Native Hawaiian education in a multi-cultural setting.  Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in education required, preferably with a Montessori background, along with four years of experience in an administrative position.

I.           Position Summary

Successful operation of Kawaiaha`o Church School requires a competent administrator to provide instructional leadership and management of the school’s day-to-day activities.  The School Director will set educational standards and goals and establish the policies and procedures to achieve them.    The Director will supervise administrative staff, teachers, and other employees; develop academic programs, monitor the educational progress of students, train and motivate teachers and other staff, administer accurate recordkeeping, prepare budgets and perform many other duties.  The Director will also handle relations with parents, prospective and current students, and the community-at-large.

II.         SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBITIES

Fiscal

  • Prepare and present an annual budget for the Board of Trustees of Kawaiaha`o Church.
  • Operate the school within the budget and review fiscal reports monthly.
  • Purchase equipment and supplies as stipulated in budget. Monitor billing and payment and work with families to resolve payment issues.

Fund Development and Grant Management

  • Secure grants with government agencies and other community organizations
  • Develop fundraisers and special events to support operational costs and financial assistance to families
  • Develop partnership opportunities with Kamehameha Schools, Pauahi Keiki Scholarships, and OHA for tuition assistance and scholarship programs.

Administration

  • Responsible for day to day administration of school and staff.
  • Oversees and assists in the management of all financial affairs of the school
  • Ensure the school is in compliance with all state and local licensing regulations.
  • Maintain all school documents, staffing and facilities requirements as established by state Department of Human Services (DHS).
  • Maintain all school documents, staffing, curriculum and programs for yearly American Montessori Society (AMS) review and membership.

Educational

  • Prepare and have guidelines in place and evaluate curriculum that gives students the basic skills they will need to succeed in school and establish an understanding of Christian faith and Native Hawaiian values.
  • Participate in weekly team planning sessions.
  • Create and submit age appropriate lesson plans.
  • Implement daily curriculum and activities for children.
  • Nurture the social/emotional, cognitive, physical and spiritual development of the children.

Staff

  • Oversee the staffing of the program including hiring, firing and disciplinary measures on staff performance.
  • Maintain records on employee staff development seminars, conferences and workshops.
  • Maintain First Aid and CPR requirements for all employees.
  • Prepare job descriptions and update as necessary.
  • Supervise and conduct yearly evaluations on staff, to include annual goals.
  • Handle staff complaints, concerns and conflicts.

Enrollment

  • Responsible for achieving and maintaining the student enrollment levels each school year, as determined by the Executive Director and Board of Trustees on an annual basis.
  • Plan yearly Open House events.
  • Give tours of the center to prospective families and enroll new children.
  • Familiarize parents with school policies.
  • Plan for the orientation of new students.
  • Maintain an advertising program to promote enrollment.

Parents

  • Have a personal knowledge of each child and family.
  • Greet families each morning and be available to parents at all chapels.
  • Meet with parents on a one to one basis as requested to answer questions and address concerns.
  • Oversee Kalehiwa parent/teacher organization to maintain positive relationships and open communication for betterment of the organization.
  • Take continuing responsibility of educating parents about the Montessori method of education.
  • Plan programs for parent education.
  • Oversee preparation of monthly parent newsletter and school calendar for events and yearly schedule of holidays and breaks.
  • Handle parent complaints/questions and concerns.

III.        EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • A minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in education and /or Christian Education; Master’s Degree preferred.
  • At least four years of experience in daycare administration, education, nonprofit administration and/or Christian Education.
  • Knowledge of the Hawaiian language and culture.
  • Working knowledge of computer operations (MS Word, MS Outlook, Excel, MS Office and PowerPoint).
  • Ability to perform other physical duties as required to accommodate position.
